E-mail me at ryanrose@journalist.com if you have any other questions. It is good to be in your first year of college, that is when you can do the most to propel yourself in your college career and ultimately your professional career. The number one thing I can tell you to do now at your stage is this:

Put as much effort, time, energy, and love into every opportunity you have to get experience in broadcasting. Any chance you have to go watch someone film, help someone film, help someone edit, do a project for someone, write a story, etc… do it.

The reason I say this is because that is where you learn the most and create a foundation for your very own work ethic.

In college I was a producer from my sophomore year until I graduated, another close friend of mine and I were producers that entire time, and we took advantage of every opportunity that presented itself to us.

Among directing, anchoring, film, editing, writing, and reporting stories for a newscast, my friend Evan and I learned how to do every other job that exists in order to make a newscast happen. In addition to that we did video production as well. We made numerous music videos and professionally styled promotional videos for our univerisity, churches, weddings, and more, we also each made two short films and actually filmed, edited, directed, and produced a hollywood style music video for a rising band.

I am not saying all this to say, “look at me, I’m awesome” I am saying it to make a point, and that point is the more you do the more you learn and the better you get. So my advice is learn and do as much as you can while you are in college, because once you get a job, the training wheels come off and it is real life from there on.

Now hardship wise in my degree there were just a few, but nothing big, just disagreements here and there, or instances where I made a mistake and was called on it. There will always be misunderstandings and frustations with those who you work for, are learning under, or even work with, and those who work under you. However the most important thing you can learn is how to treat people and maintain your composure in confrontations, misunderstandings, and disagreements. If you can keep your head, stay calm, and maintain composure, you can accomplish just about anything you want as well as display your maturity and professionalism in a time where you may be getting scolded for a mistake.

There was one time my wife and I were denied a scholarship because of our religious beliefs, and things like that are going to happen. If you want to know more about that instance send me a question in an e-mail, I will answer.

The most important thing I can tell you is to be yourself, be dedicated and passionate to whatever you REALLY want to do, and take every opportunity you have to learn and gain experience and take it for everything it is worth.

God Bless you and I hope you become a powerful producer of video and Media products out of Africa!
